NEW YORK -- The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a $100,000 coupon for Cialis, its generic equivalent to Viagra, for men who take the medication. The drug is a generic version of the popular erectile dysfunction drug, Levitra. Cialis will cost the FDA $10.80 and will be available for $6.99.
The drug is known for its ability to improve blood flow to the penis and can cause erections in men who have a penile tumor called a meningioma. It's also known to help with erectile dysfunction by relaxing the smooth muscle in the penis, which helps to produce blood flow to the penis when sexually stimulated. Cialis is available for a limited time as an over-the-counter product in some countries.
According to the FDA, Cialis works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping men get and maintain an erection. The drug is approved for use by men 18 to 64 years old who have experienced difficulties with sexual desire or performance. Cialis is also being tested for off-label use in women.
